We Are UMaine Machias

Maine’s coastal campus

The University of Maine at Machias is the Downeast regional campus of the University of Maine. Located in a historic town on Maine’s Bold Coast, UMaine Machias’ campus is surrounded by premier outdoor recreation opportunities, from kayaking and fishing to mountain biking and four-wheeling. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1 and an average class size of fewer than 20 students, we take pride in fostering a strong sense of community and connection that begins inside the classroom and extends beyond the boundaries of campus.

Why UMaine Machias?

We’re a great choice for students who want to learn in a supportive, close-knit campus environment. In 2024 our campus was ranked as the No. 1 LGBTQ+ friendly campus in Maine and New England by Campus Pride Index as well as No. 4 in the U.S. for rural community campuses with less than 5,000 students. As a community-engaged campus we offer field-based and service-oriented learning opportunities that help students develop professional skills, self-confidence and a sense of connection with the community.  On average 69% of our students complete at least one internship or CO-OP experience.

Academics

Courses at UMaine Machias are student-oriented with a focus on partnering with local organizations to prepare students for a career in their field of study, emphasizing service-learning projects, fieldwork, and leveraging the resource-rich natural environment of Downeast Maine as a “second classroom.” With applied research and hands-on student experiences being at the heart of what we do, 94% of our students state that they feel prepared with the skills necessary to stand out in the competitive workforce or continue on to graduate study.
